What Motivated Andrew Hill's Charter Vote?

Friday, December 31, 2004

Today's editorial in the Mercury News again deals with Andrew Hill's charter notice. Unfortunately, there are some errors in the story that show once more that the Merc can't seem to get their facts straight. Lomas did not come from Santa Teresa, she came from Silver Creek (Riley, on the other hand, returned from Santa Teresa). It should also be noted that a major issue that was not addressed by the District was why Art Darin (see next story) replaced Ana Lomas at Silver Creek, thereby affecting the administration of two schools, when Darin could just as easily have been placed at AH temporarily. The editorial also makes no mention of the fact that several key people at AH (and other schools in the District) will be removed from the Title One rolls and shuffled back to the classroom or elsewhere, eliminating positions that have contributed to Andrew Hill's success over the past few years. In addition, Team Unruly has learned that one of the main reasons for AH's move is the District's incompetence as evidenced by the stories available at this site.

Craig Mann's Disparaging and Abusive E-mails

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

Yet another Craig Mann indiscretion, this time involving disparaging and abusive emails. Mann seems intent on being the poster child for all that's wrong with the district. He is at once an overgrown bully and sniveling whiner as evidenced by a recent spate of emails he is proudly willing to sign . . . or not.

Craig Mann Involved in Terry Gregory Scandal

Friday, December 17, 2004

Craig Mann is again the center of attention in a scandal, reported in the San Jose Mercury News, regarding the investigations surrounding unethical practices by Terry Gregory who was censured today by a 10-0 vote of the San Jose City Council.

According to the Merc: "Nov. 2 -- Gregory's former chief of staff Craig Mann, who was dismissed in Dec. 2003, files a wrongful termination claim against the city alleging that Gregory strong-armed local businesses for free meals and donations to his district and threatened Mann to ``leave quietly, or else.'' Mann contends he was fired because he confronted Gregory with the allegations that his boss had engaged in unethical activities. Mayor Ron Gonzales immediately launches an independent investigation into the allegations."

What the story doesn't reveal is the fact that Mann accompanied Gregory to various meetings in question and didn't report the "unethical activities" at the time (Notice that the timeline includes a period of almost one year between the time of Mann's termination and the filing of his suit). In a related story in the Mercury News, Mann is shown holding up a Walmart letter implicating Gregory. The question Unruly asks: If he had this letter, why did he wait until now to produce it?

Although Mann is not implicated in the scandal (and we are certainly not implying he was), it again raises the question of poor judgment on his part.

Trustees to Discuss Charter Request

Friday, December 17, 2004

Andrew Hill High School delivered a Charter School letter of intent to the ESUHSD Board. Based on the results of a vote by tenured credentialed staff, Andrew Hill High School decided enough was enough and "raised the pirate flag" by notifying the District that it intends to convert the school to a charter school in the 2005/06 school year. The decision was based on a secret ballot which required 50% plus one in favor to pass. The letter essentially informs the District that Andrew Hill intends to use the facilities for its charter school. The District and representatives of AH will now begin negotiating the details of the charter school plan.

Art Darin, District CAO, Put Out to Pasture

Art Darin, District CAO, Put Out to Pasture

Thursday, December 30, 2004

Former Mt. Pleasant principal Art Darin's appointment to Chief Academic Officer in November of 2003 was the first major position filled in superintendent Dr. Esperanza Zendejas' restructuring of district administration. Now he appears to be the first to go. Just months after a Mercury News editorial cast a spotlight on Darin and the four other men in the superintendent's cabinet as the team running the show, Darin has been named the interim principal at Silver Creek High School.

Community Group Looks to Unify Evergreen Valley School District

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

It seems that the call to mutiny in the district is not limited to Andrew Hill High School. Two other schools (that we are sure of) in the ESUHSD are exploring secession options.
