Unruly News & Updates

April 2005

Andrew Hill Votes to Charter

The Andrew Hill staff has voted to become a charter school!

The Seven Year Mess

In January we reported on a new article uncovered in the Indy Star regarding Zendejas’ IPS replacement, Duncan Pat Pritchett and his impending retirement. We decided to give the reporter of that article a call.

April’s “Did You Know?”

Did you know the district has hired three different auditing firms in the past few years? Sure you did. And the savvy among our readers can name them in order: KPMG, Harvey Rose, and most recently FCMAT. Did you know the FCMAT report noted a number of administrative and board member indiscretions when it came to credit card purchases?

You've Got Mail from Mr. Pretty Insulting in Pink

Craig Mann loves to write e-mail. He writes to friends. He writes to enemies. He sends messages to board colleagues. He openly attacks teachers for exercising their first amendment rights. And, he contacts members of the press so much that he seems to have become an unpaid Mercury News editorial writer.

The Age of Coto Cronyism is Over. Welcome to the Era of Despotic Nepotism

This management practice needed to change. It’s just ironic that those who led the loudest charge against Coto are now finding ways to use the district to help their relatives.

It's Our Birthday! Come Celebrate!

Did you know that the Did You Know feature is only three months old? Did You Know the Unruly Advocate has been around for almost a year? We’re having a no-host bash at Gordon Biersch on Friday, May 20, from 3:45 to whenever. We hope a large group can show up and celebrate this grand First Amendment experiment. C’mon down, Fensterwald. We’ll buy you a beer: there’d have been no Unruly Advocate without your diatribes. Maybe even Craig Mann will show up. If he does, he can buy us all a round on his credit card.

State Spanks Superintendent for Attempted Thuggery

After yet another display of incompetence, the district was recently slapped in the face by the state for attempting to redirect Title 1 funds to schools that do not qualify for them.

The Shortest Article Ever to Appear in the Unruly Advocate

From one of the documents over 400 teachers received in their "Notice of Accusation" hearing packet:

Wherefore the undersigned prays that notice be given by the Governing Board of the District pursuant to Ed Code [...], that the services of the above-named respondent be terminated at the close of the 2004 – 2005 school year.

Bob Nunez, Chief of Human Resources

He prays? He prays for people to be terminated?!

The Senter Road Tea Party

On December 17 an event happened that took most of the ESUHSD community by surprise. The unruly bunch at Andrew Hill High School took an official vote to submit a letter to the district announcing their intention to covert to charter status by the start of 05-06.

Day Late and a Dollar short: 935 Pink Slips, One Half-Hearted Apology, and a Silver Lining?

It’s the bitterest pill any teacher has had to swallow. Don’t forget the other stat that failed to be raised in the media: 2500 teachers were laid off statewide; 1 in 3 were teaching in the East Side Union High School District.

Like the new look? So do we. It’s bigger, bolder, and more unrulier than ever. And it’s only going to get better. Over the next month or two we’ll be updating our archives, adding dozens of stories from Indianapolis and Brownsville newspapers, as well as updating our links to the Mercury and the Metro. And, if it pans out, dare we say a video archive!? Next month we’ll finish the manufactured crisis story (the layoff notices demanded our immediate attention), begin a Zendejas history project, and give you information on some of those feckless folks residing on the East Side’s Budget Task Force. And we’re sure somewhere in there we’ll have to slap the info minister around.

Every teacher knows that April 14’s board meeting will be the biggest circus in town. We hope our parent, student, and community readers show up for the march. It starts at the Capitol Ave. Target parking lot. Folks will be meeting around 5:00. Come on down and show your support. In the history of the East Side, there has never been a more necessary time to get unruly.

Meet Your Friend, Bob Nunez: Chief of Human Resources

Most people who meet Bob Nunez for the first time think he’s a nice guy. Sure, he was booed after introducing unannounced administrative changes at a number of school sites, but when the anger subsided, some reconsidered their shooting of the district’s messenger.
