Midway Through the Seven Year Healing Process

Three years ago Superintendent Duncan “Pat” Prichett of the Indianapolis Public School (IPS) district stepped down from his position after 7 years on the job. At the time local paper The Indy Star noted Prichett’s legacy would ultimately be fixing the mess Zendejas created (The original article is buried in the Indy Star files, but you can get a sense of the challenge he faced.)

It’s been just over three years since Esperanza Zendejas decided the best way to force a buyout would be to authorize the largest teacher layoff in recent California history. () Zendejas, however, did not come up with that idea on her own. He who whispered the layoff suggestion in her ear now wears her crown (). The latter article notes that Bob Nunez, the current superintendent of the East Side Union High School District, was fired from his post in Riverside over his “managerial style.” It begs the quest ion: has Mr. Nunez’s managerial style improved life in the ESUHSD? It’s time to take a quick peek at what’s developing in Northern California’s largest high school district, if only to update the cautionary tale of what happens to a school district community after a totalitarian superintendent’s rule.
