An Unruly Advocate Whodunnit? SPECIAL REPORT
The Weak Pleasures of Narrow Minds: ESUHSD Superintendent Bob Nunez Placed on Administrative Leave
"Revenge is always the weak pleasure of a little and narrow mind" - Juvenal
In a year characterized by drastic budget cuts and financial turmoil, the East Side Union High School District suffered a self-inflicted blow this summer when the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) released a report raising concerns about inappropriate expenditures by Superintendent Bob Nunez. The greatest financial concern specifically dealt with cash payouts for Nunez's unused vacation time, which the Mercury News notes is allowed as part of Nunez's contract.

Note to Dana Hull, Murky News
As major media corporations consolidate and local daily newspapers start to fold, a growing conundrum about the role citizen journalism plays in the delivery of news and information is being debated in magazines, blogs and newspapers. Can a blog deliver information and news content in the same way as a newspaper? Don’t blogs rely on the major newspapers, radio and television news for their content? Or do blogs provide a type of content traditional media can’t?

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that East Side Board President Patricia Martinez-Roach teaches at an elementary school in the Franklin-McKinley School District? Did you know she’s been vocal lately about making East Side’s teachers pay for part of their benefits the way other districts do? Did you know Franklin-McKinley’s teachers pay for their benefits, but do not receive adequate coverage? Did you know that close to 80% of the tenured teachers at a Franklin-McKinley middle school found work in other nearby districts that pay full benefits for teachers?
Did you know that Patricia Martinez-Roach claims she pays $600 a month for benefits? Did you know Roach receives free benefits as an East Side Board member? And did you know that many of the districts that require teachers to pay for benefits provide full benefits for administrators? Did you know that most basic aid districts (districts in wealthy neighborhoods with large property tax bases) give full benefits to teachers? We knew it, and we thought you’d like to know.
THE KIKO AWARD
The infamous Kiko Award goes to those education administrators and trustees who place personal gain ahead of the public trust, and who have no problem ruining the lives of the teachers, students and communities they purport to serve. If you are an angry member of the East Side community who thinks Bob Nunez’s coffee reimbursement is shady, brother, you ain’t seen nothin’.

THE SLEEPING GIANT AWAKES: THE RETURN OF THE UNRULY ADVOCATE
The Unruly Advocate almost folded. Tired of the politics and infighting, and the departure of foils like Craig Mann and Esperanza Zendejas, the happy crew at the Unruly Advocate hoped to fade into the annals of East Side Union High School District history.
The Patricia Martinez-Roach got reelected.
While former members of the Advocate have retired (Godspeed, Dirk), others jumped aboard to shed a little light on East Side’s skeleton closet after watching the Nunez Witch Hunt play out in the Mercury News.
