Famous Reversals If you think your voice doesn't count, note some of the edicts issued by the DO Ivory Towers that were retracted after "unruly" voices were raised. It should also be noted that said Towers also bathed in the accolades for correcting their own errors. Filipino Teachers REINSTATED Librarians REINSTATED Mass E-mail REINSTATED Advisers REINSTATED Career Tech REINSTATED (at AH, at least) Class Size Limits (the 15.4 provision) REINSTATED* * This was the worst fiasco ever. At the end of the 2003/04 school year, it was anticipated that the board would use the 15.4 provision of the ESTA contract, under the clause "extraordinary" circumstances, to waive class size limits. Master schedules were produced where as many as 42 students were assigned some classes. Most (except for 9th graders) consisted of 35 or more students. The situation was so bad, and poorly planned, that some students sat on the floor because not enough desks were available for the first few days of class. When the retraction came (a week into the schedule), mass adjustments had to be made, with students transferring in and out of classes. Confusion reigned. Most teachers are used to fluid schedules during the first few weeks of school, but this was chaos. New sections had to be opened to accomodate the overflow, meaning a scramble was on to add .2 or .4 to manpower, where none was available. Trying to reschedule upwards of 2,000 students is a minor miracle at this stage of the game. Many students were frustrated because schedules for some classes are fixed, i.e., science and AP courses, meaning they are essentially untouchable as far as period availability goes. This required some bizarre prestadigitation in order to accomodate these students. In some cases, the student's entire day was scrapped and reworked. |
